Toyota Safety Sense Technology: What Is It? How Does it Keep Driver and Passengers Safer on the Road?

If you own a Toyota, you've likely heard of the innovative, cutting-edge safety features which make up the Toyota Safety Sense Technology. With so much packed into this special package though, we want to make sure that all Toyota drivers are aware of the features available to them.

Toyota Safety Sense Technology: What Does it Include?

This safety suite includes three proprietary active safety technologies. The package can help lessen or prevent collisions in a wide range of vehicle speeds under particular road conditions. The three main components of this package include: a Pre-Collison System, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beams. Let's take a more in depth look at each of these systems individually.

Pre-Collison System

A 10-inch in-vehicle camera and laser combine to make this system super effective at detecting the vehicle directly in front of your car. The Pre-Collision System (PCS) notifies the driver that a frontal collision is likely by using both audio and visual prompts. If the driver then notices the potential danger and brakes, the system can increase the braking force. If on the other hand, the driver does not brake in a set amount of time, the system will automatically apply the brakes, if the danger of a collision is imminent. It's like having a co-pilot built in!

Lane Departure Alert

As its name implies, the Lane Departure Alert (LDA) works to keep your vehicle in the appropriate lane on the roadway, without drifting or edging into another vehicle's space. The system alerts the driver with both an audio and visual alert. The LDA is designed to function optimally on relatively straight roadways and at speeds of over 32 mph. The system is also equipped with Electronic Power Steering (EPS) which offers Steering Assist function. This system may provide small corrective steering actions for a short period of time, in order to keep your vehicle in the proper lane.

Automatic High Beams

This safety feature is designed to help drivers see further ahead at nighttime. An in-vehicle camera helps to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles or the taillights of preceding vehicles and automatically switch to low beams. It's normal state is high beams, which may allow the driver to detect pedestrians or other obstacles sooner.

We hope that this information has helped you to have a better understanding of some of the unique features that the Toyota Safety Sense Technology offers. 2017 Toyota Models which include this unique suite of safety features are: the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla IM, Corolla, Land Cruiser, Avalon, and Prius.
